Abstract

Local knowledge or what is known as local wisdom is one of the advantages of community culture in a
broader sense which emphasizes a place and its locality. This research aims to analyze local knowledge
about the malapeh tradition in the Padang XI Punggasan subdistrict, Pesisir Selatan Regency. Malapeh is
a death ceremony carried out jointly by the family affected by the disaster of death, followed by the process
of sending prayers together. The Padang XI Punggasan community has long been familiar with the local
knowledge of this malapeh tradition. People believe in things that have been regulated or established by
their ancestors from generation to generation. This research uses qualitative methods with an observation
and documentation approach. The aim of this research is to define the malapeh tradition that exists in
Kenagarian Padang XI Punggasan. This research shows that the malapeh tradition in the Padang This
malapeh tradition can be said to be a form of local wisdom in the Padang XI Punggasan district.
